Since I paid a full $120 for this, I would have liked the ports to be more durable so that I can expect it to last longer, but that's about it. This used a PCIe 2.0 x4 interface for our newer Nvme drive to be recognised by the Mac it requires something known as an EFI update.

Overall I'm incredibly thankful to have this product, but it was extremely expensive and I've since seen some others around for less. However, when the Mac Pro (Late 2013) was released, the Mac OS was Mavericks, and the firmware for the machine was designed for the first generation of the SSD storage that we’re about to upgrade. Read speed up to 1050MB/s1 and write speed up to 1000MB/s1 transfer. Finally, the USB 3.0 connection uses the micro-usb port style rather than the MUCH more durable USB 3.0 Standard-B connection which I would have preferred. Accelerate productivity and score some downtime with LaCie Mobile SSD Secure featuring password activated hardware encryption. That wouldn't normally be a big issue, but the connections for both ports are pretty weak, meaning that I absolutely do expect the power port to break at some point in the future and I hope that it's repairable. An SSD (internal or external) A 2.5-inch hard drive enclosure, unless you choose an external solid state.

Also, this requires a separate power line AND a USB 3.0 connection for data. Here’s what you’ll need to add an external SSD to your Mac, copy the internal drive over to the external and then tell the computer to boot from the external drive instead of the internal drive. This adapter has worked perfectly both with Mac and PC systems, although all drives were from Mac computers.ĬONS: A couple of the fully-compatible SSDs we've connected have not come up at all with this adapter, but then are able to boot perfect ly in their original host system or an equivalent unit. When it does work, it works fast and easily. PROS: The case is high quality metal and is very rugged, but it seems much more designed for permanent installation of a single SSD rather than how we're using it, which is as a drive adapter for data retrieval and recovery. Of the compatible hard drives we've attempted to use with it, about 80% have come up - all of which were pulled from Apple products, many of which had suffered liquid spills in their immediate past. This is a great item that has been incredibly useful to us since receiving it.
